Type

Fluorite or Fluorspar is a mineral composed of fluorine and calcium, commonly found as cubic crystals. It glows with a blue shine when illuminated with light. When first discovered, this phenomenon was named fluorescence, after the mineral. Today, this term is widely used for many optical light effects regardless of colour. 

Colour

Comes in a wide range of colours such as lilac, green, blue, pink, champagne, yellow, brown or colourless. History

This crystal has been used throughout history as a flux to decrease the viscosity of slag in iron melting, hence the Latin base of the name. Fluere = To flow. It was described as early as 1530 in a work of German medieval scientist Georgius Agricola, who specialized in metallurgy and mining. He called the crystal Fluorspar. The name Fluorite came in 1797 from Carlo Antonio Napione an Italian mineralogist and mining expert. In today’s society, Fluorspar is used as an industrial name and Flourite as a gemstone name when enjoyed as crystal decorations and jewellery.

How to tell if a crystal is real:

As mentioned below Flourite is a very soft stone, real Flourite often has small marks and cracks, also when the stone is used for decoration and jewellery.

DO NOT STORE in sunlight. Fluorite’s magical colour spectrum is very sensitive to light exposure and should be kept away from the sun as much as possible. Flourite is a soft stone, vulnerable to scratching and may chip or crack if hit against a hard surface. Handle your Flourite jewellery, particularly Flourite rings with care.
